What is LAFCo?

LAFCO, or Local Agency Formation Commission, is an independent commission that oversees the creation, expansion, and reorganization of local government agencies, such as cities and special districts. Its primary goal is to ensure the efficient delivery of public services and to protect agricultural and open space lands. LAFCO works to promote orderly development, protect resources, and reduce urban sprawl by evaluating proposals for boundary changes and service provision. Each county in California has its own LAFCO, which is responsible for making decisions that impact the growth and development of local communities.
